"I have a better chance of being struck by lightning than winning the lottery."
I once made that offhand remark to a warehouse co-worker during a hot, soul-crushing shift that prompted a discussion of the vast riches awaiting us at the local Speedway. For fear of being wrong, I never purchased so much as a scratch-off during subsequent stops for gas and wrinkly meat sticks.
Instead, I did the other thing.
Getting hit by lightning didn't transform me into a superhero as any other avid comic book reader would rightly expect. While I did walk away with some cool Deadpool-ish burns, turns out that thwarting evil-doers typically requires more than smelling vaguely of burnt ham.
The experience ultimately provided an incentive to pursue a more fulfilling career path, though. You know, something about life being too short.
And I've been happily doing graphic design, web dev, and illustration ever since.
I hope we have a chance to work together someday. If we happen to meet in person, though, remember that I do radiate a powerful field of static electricity. I ask that you please refrain from testing this out by tossing various laundry items at me.
